Characterization of Porous Materials in the 

Chemical/Battery/Pharma Industry and Academy R&D

This two day course is intended for post graduate level scientists who are involved with the synthesis and application of traditional and newly developed porous materials but who feel they need a deeper understanding of characterization techniques. It will also be invaluable to those working in analytical service laboratories who need a practical understanding of how pore size and related measurements are actually done using modern automated instruments, and how to evaluate and interpret the results they obtain. Those new to the field of gas sorption and/or porous materials in general will also benefit from this focused time away from the bench to quickly assimilate new knowledge in the field.

Over two days you will learn the details of the most important technologies for the characterization of porous materials including heterogeneous catalysts, battery and pharmaceutical materials, how to properly prepare samples and select appropriate analysis parameters, how to interpret raw data, and choose the best calculations according to sample type, and properly report results. Ample breaks are included.

Instructor:  Dr Martin A.Thomas, Lead Scientist, Anton Paar QuantaTec
Dr Thomas has more than 40 years’ experience in the characterization of powders and porous materials. 
He graduated from the University of Birmingham in the UK with a Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry followed by a PhD in physical-inorganic chemistry for studies relating to the nickel hydroxide electrode. 
His working career includes a period at Cookson Group (now Vesuvius plc) as Research Investigator followed by six years at ICI’s Catalyst Research Center (now a Johnson Matthey facility) as a Principal Research Officer before joining Quantachrome Corporation (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 1991. His contributions there have included serving as Director of Engineering, Director of Science and Technology, Director of Business Development and Director of Product Development.
Dr Thomas is co-author of “Characterization of porous solids and Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density” (published by Springer) and is named co-inventor on ten patents relating to porous solids and their characterization.
