Zeta Potential: A Sensitive and Versatile Parameter for the Characterization and Design of Advanced Materials

The properties of material-water interfaces determine the stability of nanoparticle dispersions or protein adsorption on a biomaterial’s surface. Among these properties, surface charge drives electrostatic interaction. Both charge and electrostatic forces are best assessed by analysis of the zeta potential.

In this webinar, guest speaker Dr. Sara Ferraris of Politecnico di Torino will offer insights into her research activities and share her experience with zeta potential analysis for advanced materials characterization.

You will learn about the complementary analytical techniques of electrophoretic light scattering and streaming potential for zeta potential analysis in colloidal dispersions and at solid-water interfaces.

We will focus on the characterization of titanium for dental implants and artificial joints as a selected biomaterial, and the effect of tanning agents on leather.

Thomas Luxbacher

Thomas Luxbacher is principal scientist for surface charge and zeta potential at Anton Paar. Prior to his present role, he was a product manager for surface zeta potential analyzers for more than 15 years. Before joining Anton Paar, Thomas gained experience in the semiconductor and automotive businesses. He received his MSc and PhD degrees in Physical Chemistry from Graz University of Technology.

Sara Ferraris

Dr. Sara Ferraris is Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) at Politecnico di Torino. She received her PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in 2010. Her main research interests are surface modification and characterization of advanced materials. In the last years she intensively worked on the combination of electrophoretic and surface zeta potential measurements for the optimization of surface functionalization and coatings in the biomaterials field.
