AAS

A procedure in absorptiometry, also called atomic absorption spectrophotometry or flame spectrometry. The procedure is based on the principle that a photon emitted by an excited atom can be absorbed by a non-excited atom of the same element. The sample is vaporized and the light from the element to be determined is sent through this vapor.

Areometer

Areometers are glass tubes marked with a scale. The lower end of the tube forms a bulb filled with lead shot. This ensures the instrument remains vertical when immersed in liquid. Areometers are used to determine the density of liquids; there are different values in use (ρ, SG20/04, SG20/20, etc.). The lower the areometer sinks into the liquid, the lower the density. This is why the scale values increase from top to bottom. For most solutions the density increases with the concentration so the immersion depth of the areometer is inversely proportional to the concentration (the higher the concentration, the lower the immersion depth). With the DIN spindle, the specific gravity can be read off the instrument directly.
