Nano-Rheology with the Physica MCR Series

Continuous innovation

The first series of Physica MCR rheometers, developed in 1999, were the first commercially available nano torque rheometers. Now the new Physica MCR series, launched in 2004, pushes back the limits even further.

The new Physica MCR series offers 1):

  • Nano Strain of 10 nanorad = 0.01 µrad
  • Nano Torque of 1 nanoNm = 0.001 µNm

New materials

For testing and developing progressive new materials such as nano emulsions and nano dispersions it is essential to use a modern rheometer with nano capabilities.
In order to measure sensitive structures in the linear and non-linear range it is necessary to have a reliable rheometer system with an excellent and proven control mechanism.
The Physica MCR rheometers are capable of measuring in the nano torque and nano strain region due to their unique EC Powerdrive motor 2) (synchronous drive), the high-precision air bearing 2) and the Direct Strain position control (DSO).

Ranges

Evaluation of the nano torque and nano strain range:

  • The torque limit of a rheometer system strongly depends on the measuring conditions.
  • In a limited frequency range it is possible to perform measurements down to torque values as low as 1 nanoNm.
  • The torque and strain limits are valid over a wide range of frequencies.
  • The new Physica MCR series has an excellent nano strain resolution.
  • For frequencies below 5 Hz the lowest settable deflection angle is as low as 10 nanorad (0.01 µrad).
