Microwave radiation’s first use was in the 1940s, in the field of telecommunications. Microwave ovens then became popular in households for the rapid warming of food. This showed that microwave radiation had other uses. In the field of sample preparation microwave radiation has been successfully used for some years and has become an excellent alternative to classical decomposition methods.
Using closed systems in which samples are directly heated by microwaves allows decomposition at extremely high pressures and at temperatures considerably higher than the boiling point of the reagents used. This drastically shortens the time required for sample preparation while improving the decomposition quality.
In-depth knowledge of the behavior of microwave radiation has lead Anton Paar to produce highly sophisticated instruments with the highest possible safety standards.
