Gain insights into synthesis processes and material properties with live Raman analysis

Combining microwave synthesis and measurement of physical properties with Live Raman Spectroscopy opens up a wealth of information that has not been accessible before. This is particularly the case for in-situ measurements during chemical reactions.

We will demonstrate the capabilities of Live Raman analysis during microwave synthesis on the example of a Suzuki Cross-Coupling reaction. Raman monitoring during the reaction cycle provides valuable insights into the reaction kinetics, formation and consumption of intermediates as well as reaction end-points. Collecting information throughout the entire reaction cycle allows a much more targeted reaction optimization compared to analysis steps after synthesis. This way, iterations can be reduced and better yields can be achieved within a fraction of the time.

Chemical reactions can result in changes in the mechanical properties. In epoxy curing, for example, we show the changes in macroscopic visco-elastic behavior show in the rheology data. The chemical reaction on the molecular level can be made visible in the Raman signal and follow a different path over time. Both combined shed light onto the underlying mechanisms and kinetics of the curing process, which influence the material properties and help in their optimization.
