True Density: A Powerful Quality Control Metric for Li-Ion Batteries

Gas pycnometry is commonly used by the Li-ion battery industry to check the skeletal density (also known as true density) of Li-ion battery electrode powders and slurries. The skeletal density of the powders is related to their purity and crystallinity as well as the energy storage density of the completed electrodes. The slurries can also be quickly and easily checked to determine their solids fraction. Such density measurements are important for quality control of raw ingredients and intermediate processed materials as well as final product performance.
