Surface Area and Porous Material Characterisation

The surface area and pore size distributions play critical roles in many industrially important materials. These properties influence, for example, dissolution rates, dispersion of particles in liquid and semi-liquid systems, sintering rates, the adsorption capacity of toxic gases and unwanted water pollutants. Some special attention is given to materials characterization in other environmentally relevant applications: the capacity to capture and store greenhouse gases, capacity to store hydrogen, the charge and discharge rate of batteries. This seminar will describe the technologies and methods to measure these properties, from sub nanometer pores to around 1 mm, surface areas from less than 1 m/g to over 3000 m2/g, and how to apply each of them in the most appropriate manner. Additional insights will be presented regarding how the latest improvements in technology have decreased analysis times while enhancing sensitivity and accuracy. This seminar is suitable for those involved in new materials research and development, in raw materials qualification, and product quality assurance.

Dr. Martin A. Thomas PhD

Dr. Martin Thomas has 40 years of industrial experience in the characterization of porous materials and powders. He graduated from the University of Birmingham (UK) with a master’s degree in analytical chemistry and PhD in physical/inorganic chemistry (Ni(OH)2 electrode), and joined Quantachrome Instruments (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 1991. He is named on ten patents relating to porous materials and their characterization, and is co-author of “Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density” published by Springer. He has held the position of Global Lead Scientist for Anton Paar QuantaTec’s Surface and Pores product line since 2019.
