The alcohol concentration is an important parameter in the production of flavored spirits. Since today's flavored spirits continuously evolve in profile and taste, the measurement of the alcohol concentration turns out to be difficult. For accurate alcohol monitoring when sugar and other soluble substances are added, the density measurement is complemented with additional measurement technologies. Spirits and liqueurs

Spirits are alcoholic drinks produced by distillation with ethanol contents of at least 20 % v/v (ABV). The majority of spirits has an ethanol content of around 40% v/v.

To create new drinking experiences, spirits are infused with different fruits, herbs, spices or other essences. Moreover, liqueurs are flavored spirits where sugar has been added as well. Typically, they are heavily sweetened and un-aged.

To achieve a highly accurate alcohol concentration measurement, the total flavor and sugar content (solids or extract) must be considered. For spirits with a total content of dissolved solids < 6 g/L a density measurement is sufficient. If the content of solids is higher, a second measuring value is required. For example, in the USA this is regulated by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).
