This presentation introduces the fundamentals of physisorption and chemisorption and demonstrates their combined use to study catalyst deactivation. A platinum-on-alumina catalyst serves as a case study to highlight the advantages of cyclic adsorption measurements performed entirely within a single instrument, without removing the sample cell.
The catalyst is characterized at different stages of its life cycle—fresh, after propane dehydrogenation (via TPX), and after regeneration by temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). Alternating physisorption, reaction, and regeneration steps provides complementary structural and chemical information, enabling in situ monitoring of changes to surface area and pore size, metal dispersion, and deactivation phenomena.
This integrated approach offers a practical and largely unmatched strategy for comprehensive, all in situ catalyst characterization across its full operational lifetime.
