Powder Rheology 6: Warren Spring Cohesion – How to Measure a Powder‘s Cohesion, Caking, and the Influence of Humidity

The sixth webinar in the series on powder rheology focuses on the cohesion of cohesive powders and granular media.

Warren Spring cohesion can be used to determine the cohesion of consolidated powders as a function of an applied normal stress. It is often used for cohesive or very cohesive powders like cement or flour. This method can be applied in quality control and powder characterization (e.g. elasticity). Furthermore, this test can be used to study the caking of powders, which is the tendency to aggregate and form lumps instead of flowing smoothly. In addition it allows you to measure the influence of humidity on a powder‘s behavior.

Timothy Aschl is the global product manager for powder rheology at Anton Paar since 2017. He holds a PhD in chemistry from the École Polytechnique, France where he researched biosensors. His Master’s degree in technical physics was obtained from the Technical University of Graz, with a focus on biofuels.
