Powder Characterization Masterclass

In this course, you will learn about characterization possibilities for powders and the benefits from using multiple techniques. The methods presented include: X-ray diffraction, particle sizing & imaging, specific surface measurements, gas pycnometry and powder rheology.

  • On the first day, X-ray diffraction and specific surface measurements along with gas pycnometry are on the agenda.
  • On the second day, particle sizing and imaging as well as powder rheology are in the focus of the workshop.

All topics are explained theoretically first and then followed by a hands-on session where the very same sample is tested via the different measurement techniques. The hands-on sessions come with a characterization guide to show the benefits of the individual methods and to highlight their synergies

Topics:

  • Theoretical part covering the basics of each measurement method
  • Explanation of the functionality of the individual measurement devices
  • Analysis and interpretation of measurement data
  • Hands-on training in the lab with identical samples for every measuring method.

Dr. techn. Aleksandra Mitrovic

Dr. Aleksandra Mitrovic has a background in biochemistry, which she earned at the University of Sciences in Novi Sad, Serbia. She completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Biotechnology from Graz University of Technology and subsequently worked in the field of applied biocatalysis through various industrial projects. In 2017, Aleksandra joined Anton Paar as a global Product Manager for laser diffraction, where she has accumulated 8 years of experience and continues to deepen her expertise in this specialized field.

Helena Weingrill

Dr. Helena Weingrill will lead you through the Powder Rheology workshop comprising theoretical and practical sessions. After obtaining her PhD in polymer science at Montanuniversitaet Leoben in Austria with a special focus on material characterization, she joined Anton Paar in 2019. As global product manager for Powder rheology, she has specialized in the rheological characterization of powders of all kinds.

Benedikt Schrode

Benedikt Schrode studied technical physics at Graz University of Technology. In his PhD, he focused on the preparation and characterization of epitaxially grown organic thin films by (grazing incidence) X-ray diffraction using lab instruments and synchrotron sources. In July 2020, he joined Anton Paar as an application specialist for X-ray diffraction.

Dr. Martin A. Thomas PhD

Dr. Martin Thomas has 40 years of industrial experience in the characterization of porous materials and powders. He graduated from the University of Birmingham (UK) with a master’s degree in analytical chemistry and PhD in physical/inorganic chemistry (Ni(OH)2 electrode), and joined Quantachrome Instruments (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 1991. He is named on ten patents relating to porous materials and their characterization, and is co-author of “Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density” published by Springer. He has held the position of Global Lead Scientist for Anton Paar QuantaTec’s Surface and Pores product line since 2019.

Dr. Henrique Brasil

Dr. Henrique Brasil holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering, with extensive research experience from the University of Graz in Austria, where he specialized in the conversion of lignin and lignocellulosic biomass. Experienced in the synthesis and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts, ethanol conversion, and biofuel production from vegetable oils, he joined Anton Paar in 2022 as a Product Specialist and soon became Product Manager for the Dynamic Image Analysis instruments.
