Flow and Deformation Behavior of Battery Slurries and Pastes

Safe and efficient battery technology will play a key role in fueling the current and future energy needs of our world today.  Batteries typically utilize a range of different raw materials; however, the assembly of components generally includes electrodes (anode and cathode), separators, electrolytes and housing. In short, the typical battery production process starts with mixing raw materials to form a cathode and anode slurry that is coated onto a metal substrate typically via blade or slot die, forming the respective electrode. Coating process involves application of mid to high level shear rates for a short period of time followed by gravitational stresses acing on the slurry after the coating application. Rheological characterization aids not only in the optimization of battery slurry formulation, process design, and storage behavior of the formulation but also enables predictions for the slurry behavior during and after the coating process. This webinar will address how rheology can be used as a robust tool to reliably characterize the battery slurry in the battery manufacturing process.

Key Learning Objectives
