Porosity: A Critical Parameter for Both Coated and Pressed Electrodes

Creating cathodes and anodes usually involves bringing particles of active material together into a layer that contains the prescribed amount of active material in a predictable volume, but still allow enough space for electrolyte penetration.

This webinar will detail the methods used to quantitatively describe that pore space that is created, both in terms of volume (porosity) and pore size distribution. Measuring the porosity of the separator will also be addressed.

Dr. Martin A. Thomas PhD

Dr Martin Thomas has 40 years of industrial experience in the characterization of porous materials and powders. He graduated from the University of Birmingham (UK) with a master’s degree in analytical chemistry and PhD in physical/inorganic chemistry (Ni(OH)2 electrode), and joined Quantachrome Instruments (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 1991. He is named on ten patents relating to porous materials and their characterization, and is co-author of “Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density” published by Springer. He has held the position of Global Lead Scientist for Anton Paar QuantaTec’s Surface and Pores product line since 2019.
