Chemistry | Density versus conductivity - concentration measurement in electrolyte solutions

Anton Paar’s density and sound velocity sensors are suitable wherever concentration measurement of an electrolyte solution is required. The sensor material of the sensor without plastic coating guarantees fast reactions even under rapid temperature changes and hence highly accurate measurement results. In contrast, the conductivity measurement has some disadvantages that negatively affect the measurement results.

The challenges of concentration measurement

To guarantee highest accurate real-time concentration measurement in process, the physical property which shows the biggest change upon change in concentration should be employed. There needs to be a significant correlation between specific concen-tration values and the corresponding measured value. Especially the influence of the temperature on the physical property must be taken into account.

Depending on the electrolyte solution and the measuring range, different measuring methods are available to achieve highly accurate measurement results.

Conductivity

Conductivity is the ability of a substance to conduct electricity, heat or sound. The conductivity measurement of a solution is that of the total concentration of ions (anions and cations) that conduct the electric current. It provides information on the ionic strength of a solution, but not on the nature of the ions.
