Quality control of liquids for e-cigarettes

With the popularity of personal vaporizers on the rise, liquids for e-cigarettes have become a huge part of vaping throughout the world. A quality check during the manufacturing is necessary.

Introduction

E-juice, vape juice, and e-liquid are all terms to describe the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

E-liquid is the flavored fluid that is used inside of electronic cigarettes. The vapor of electronic cigarettes is created by heating the e-liquids to make an aerosol, which replaces smoke from traditional cigarettes.

These e-liquids are typically made up of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavor agents, and nicotine. New trends see the introduction of cannabis (CBD) in the final composition.

The e-liquid is passed through the coil of the e-cigarette while current from the battery is also passed, both of which trigger the e-liquid to heat up and produce vapor.

PG and VG are the main components of the e-liquid and they can be dosed differently, giving the e-cigarette different properties.

Vegetable glycerine (VG) is a thick, naturally sweet liquid that provides the vapor from the liquid. Propylene glycol (PG) is a thin liquid, which acts as the flavor carrier. Some people are allergic to PG and e-liquids without that ingredient are available. The higher the VG percentage, the more cloud and the smoother the vape is, but with less flavor. Higher PG gives less cloud, more ‘throat hit’ and possibly more flavor. Throat hit refers to the feeling a smoker gets when inhaling nicotine.
