JHB: From Flow Behaviour to Optics to Identification

Deepen your knowledge and learn how to combine the various measuring techniques of viscosity, refractive index and polarimetry to streamline your quality control and R&D processes.

What does each measuring technique entail:

  • Modern refractive index measuring systems meet specific requirements that enable long-term and care-free real-time substance identification and determination of critical factors, such as the concentration and purity of solutions, over the whole production process. They fulfill the five most important requirements for process control and monitoring, as well as latest maintenance and hygienic demands.
  • Polarimetry is a superior, sensitive and non-destructive measuring technique for the measurement of optical activity, as exhibited by inorganic as well as organic compounds.
  • The physical quantity ‘viscosity’ gives information on how thick a fluid is and how easily it flows. In scientific terms, viscosity is the measure of a fluid’s internal flow resistance. It is the resistance which a fluid shows when being deformed.

Akhona Qambela

Akhona obtained her BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Rhodes University and joined Anton Paar Southern Africa in 2014 as part of the Measurement Department. She has extensive experience working with clients across various industries and in 2021 she was promoted to Product Manager for Refractive Index and Polarimetry. Her main focus is providing solutions for R&D and quality control in Gauteng and surrounding inland provinces.

Poifo Dipholo

Poifo Dipholo completed her National N Diploma in Engineering Studies from Johannesburg Institute of Engineering and Technology in 2018. In February 2023 she joined Anton Paar Southern Africa as Sales Specialist for Measurement with focus on density, viscosity, refractometry and oxidation stability. In 2023 she joined SAAFOST as a member.
