Tracking the Phase Transitions of Phase-changing Materials

Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering allows tracking the phase transition of phase-change materials. In this study combined SWAXS and DSC measurements were performed for revealing the melting/crystallization behavior of paraffin wax.

Introduction

Phase-change materials like fatty acids, paraffins and salt hydrates are used as raw materials in food, build-ing material and packaging applications. The determi-nation of the phase-change behavior is essential for tuning the material’s properties.

Automated small- and wide-angle X-ray (SWAXS) scattering experiments were performed at different temperatures for determining the nature of all occur-ring phases of a material using the Anton Paar SAXSpace system.
