In-situ dehydration experiments on crystalline tungstic acids

An in-situ XRD study of the influence of temperature on the dehydration behaviour of crystalline tungsten acids.

Tungstic acids, WO3*nH2O, are important basic mate-rials for industrial products like displays or passive and active sensor devices. The classical tungstic acid (n = 1), was used originally for the fabrication of tungsten filaments for incandescent lamps, presently it is used mainly as alloying component in heavy metals and for the production of tungsten carbide in hard metals.

Tungstic acid hydrate (n = 2) is known to form long-range ordered tactoids, colloidal solutions of platelet particles giving rise to “Schiller layers”. It is an extensively studied parent phase of metastable hex-agonal tungsten oxide and of hydrated sodium tungstates with pyrochlor and hexagonal structure. Colloidal tungsten oxide (n = 1.8) has been found to be promising to produce electrochromic layers in re-versible display devices.
