Base Oils, Pharma, Lubricants | Viscosity of White Oils

Quality control of white oils requires the determination of various parameters. Viscosity values at different temperatures are important for specification. Anton Paar’s SVM 4001 viscometer with its two measuring cells is the perfect solution for fast and standard-compliant testing, providing more than just viscosity results.

One of the most important raw materials used for medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes are the so-called white oils. These highly refined hydrocarbon oils are chemically inert, extremely pure, stable odour- and colourless and non-toxic. Depending on their intended purpose, a certain viscosity is required, e.g. to ensure perfect mixing with other components in the production process or for reliable lubrication of machinery in food production plants. When used at different temperatures, the viscosity index (VI) is also important.

White oils are widely used; e.g. for preparation of pharmaceuticals, creams and ointments, veterinary products, cosmetic products, manufacturing aids, emollients and diluents, but also as lubricant for instruments and machinery used in this scope of application. They are also used as plasticizer for production of food-contact or medical rubber articles (e.g. EPDM or butyl rubber) or as lubricant in the textile industry.

Besides the highly refined and purified medicinal white oils a technical white oil grade is available. A main difference is the higher content of aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the technical white oil grade.

White oils for production of drugs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. must fulfill several specifications, such as US FDA 21 CFR 172.878; US FDA 21 CFR 178.3570, US FDA 21 CFR 178.3620 "White mineral oil"; USDA H1, European Pharmacopoeia, Deutsches Arzneibuch DAB. The production lines must be certified according to ISO 9001.
