Rheological Measurements of Lubricants at High Shear Rates

Viscosity plays a predominant role in the functionality of industrial lubricants. Many industrial lubricants exhibit shear-thinning behavior, i.e. their viscosity decreases significantly with shear rate, even at shear rates above 1000 1/s.

One of the most important rheological parameters for lubricants is viscosity since it directly affects tribological properties such as friction between interacting surfaces and wear. Many lubricants, especially those containing polymer additives, exhibit strong non-Newtonian behavior. Therefore, a proper characterization of its time-independent rheological properties, i.e. the dependence of viscosity on shear rate, is fundamental to understanding how they will perform on real industrial applications. Of special interest in many industrial applications is the characterization of the lubricant at shear rates well above 1000 1/s.
