1 Introduction

Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts that exist in a liquid state at and above room temperature. Ionic liquids consist of an cationic (positively charged) and anionic (negatively charged) part.

Particularly ionic liquids that are liquid at room (RTILs) combine a number of outstanding properties e.g.

  • a wide liquid range with melting points around ambient temperature
  • low flammability
  • low volatility
  • high thermal and electrochemical stability

These functions depend on the molecular structure of a liquid´s cations and anions. By exchanging the cations and anions, the physical and chemical properties can be influenced.

Ionic liquids are used in various applications, for example as electrolytes in electrochemistry, as solvents in catalytic and extraction processes or in chemical synthesis.
