Continuous SWAXS Data Studies with the EIGER2 R 500K WAXS Module

Continuous small- and wide angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) studies of colloidal gold nanoparticles and a crystalline polymer samples were performed with the SAXSpoint 2.0 system using the EIGER2 R 500K WAXS module.

1 Introduction

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) determines a material's structure at the nanometer level, it resolves sizes in a range of approx. 1 to 300 nm. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) in contrast determines struc-tures on an atomic scale with typical distances below 1 nm. Many materials exhibit both nanosized domains and crystallinity at the atomic level. This raises the demand for analyzing both properties simultaneously and continuously in one single instrument.

The SAXSpoint 2.0 laboratory SAXS & WAXS system by Anton Paar now integrates the EIGER2 R 500K detector WAXS module.

This 2-dimensional hybrid-photon-counting (HPC) detector features high count rates and zero dark cur-rent. In particular, the detector stands out for its small pixel size which enables recording high-resolution WAXS data providing more WAXS data points than e.g., the Pilatus series detectors (172 μm pixel size).

In combination with the EIGER R 1M SAXS detector, it provides simultaneous and continuous 2D SWAXS data from q = 0.02 to 41 nm-1 enabling dynamic measurements and phase transition studies in one go. Detector control and data acquisition is implemented in the SAXSdrive software.
