How to Prevent Sample Slip in Tensile DMA Measurements

It is well known that sample slip during a tensile DMA experiment can lead to incorrect data. In this report, we investigated how profiled clamps can enable accurate material data to be obtained by eliminating slip effects.

Introduction

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is a versatile analytic tool for the determination of thermomechanical properties of polymers, such as glass transition temperature (Tg). Additionally, different types of loads (e.g. tension, bending or torsion) can be used to adjust the measurement to represent realworld applications.

Depending on the specimen, slipping may occur at the interface between the clamp jaw and specimen surface during the measurement.

This application report provides assistance in avoiding these kinds of measurement errors by using profiled clamp jaws.
