Determination of Glucosamine via Polarimetry

Glucosamine is widely used in the pharmaceutical and the food industry. As the optical rotation is pH-dependent, the international pharmacopoeias require the polarimetric measurement of glucosamine at defined acidic or basic solutions.

Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides. Glucosamine is naturally present in the shells of shellfish, animal bones, bone marrow, and fungi. It is commercially produced by the hydrolysis of shellfish exoskeletons or sometimes by fermentation of a grain (e.g. wheat).

Glucosamine is mainly used in pharmaceutical products as a supplement in medications for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. But it is also used for the treatment of inflammatory-mediated diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, neurological diseases, and skin disorders. Therefore, it additionally finds application as nutritional supplement in human and animal food.

The quality of glucosamine can be tested using MCP polarimeters from Anton Paar. Anton Paar’s MCP 100/150 polarimeters are equipped with the latest technology which ensures fast and reliable measurements with the most convenient operation. With their small size, MCP 100/150 polarimeters are the solution for limited space on the lab bench. Anton Paar’s MCP 5100/5300/5500 polarimeters are renowned for their modular concept. Options such as multiple wavelengths can be upgraded later on-site.
This makes the MCP polarimeter able to adapt to upcoming measuring tasks flexibly. Automatic sample cell- and quartz control plate identification (Toolmaster) and real-time images of the inside of the cell with the FillingCheck camera makes the MCP 5100/5300/5500 polarimeter a perfect partner in glucosamine analysis.
