Prohibiting the decomposition reaction of air-sensitive Lithium Hydride (LiH)

A study to prove the functionality of the TTK 600 antechamber lid which is designed to avoid decomposition of air-sensitive materials during sample preparation.

The need for studying air-sensitive sample materials is increasing as for example a large amount of compounds used in the field of hydrogen storage or the pharmaceutic industry require oxygen- and water-free conditions (1). Several attempts for preparing air/water-sensitive samples to be used for X-ray dif-fraction studies have been done so far including covering the samples with foils (e.g. Kapton or Mylar), using capillaries or domed sample holders. These methods however do have the disadvantage of a certain amount of leakage (esp. Kapton foil) and give additional peaks due to the used cover materials.

With the TTK 600 Low-Temperature Chamber a new approach was developed by Anton Paar GmbH: a special lid was equipped with an antechamber which can be mounted easily to the temperature chamber with just two screws. The antechamber lid combines the possibility to prepare air-sensitive samples safely in a glovebox/bag and to start non-ambient tests immediately after a sealed transport of the sample to the chamber.
