Using an Immobilization Cell to test Paper Coatings

Rheometers often are used in the paper-coatings industry for quality control and research. Standard rheological tests can predict a material's behavior in manufacturing and application; however, only one fixture is currently available that allows paper coatings to be tested directly on paper: the Anton Paar Immobilization Cell. Base paper is put into the Cell, and a vacuum pump pulls the coating's liquid phase through the paper. We tested two coatings in a concentriccylinder system and in our Immobilization Cell. Two samples that showed similar properties in standard rheological tests then showed different behavior when tested with the Immobilization Cell.

Ms. C runs a testing lab for a paper coatings company, and she has a problem: One of her new paper coatings has a special additive that does not get well-absorbed by the base paper. When she tests this new coating with a rheometer, it appears to have the same materials properties as the older aterial without the additive.
