Comparison of a reinforced and a pure Polypropylene from -150 °C to +180 °C (DMTA)

The thermal and mechanical behavior of a pure polypropylene (PP) and a polypropylene reinforced with glass fibers (PP-GF) should be investigated in the glass transition range and the rubber-elastic range. The measurements were carried out using an MCR rheometer with convection temperature device.

Introduction

The thermal and mechanical behavior of a pure polypropylene (PP) and a polypropylene reinforced with glass fibers (PP-GF) should be investigated in the glass transition range and the rubber-elastic range.

Polypropylene (PP):

PP is translucent and partially-crystalline. It has excellent electrical and chemical properties and is relatively low-priced. The material properties are similar to those of polyethylene PE with some differences which are worth mentioning: PP has a lower density, a higher melting point TM > 160 °C, typically TM = 175 °C. It has a relative good resistance to heat and a high degree of rigidity and stability. The glass temperature Tg is approx. 0 °C. PP can be laminated and oriented in a certain direction. The typical processing temperature is between 100 °C and 120 °C.
