Relevance of zeta potential analysis for textiles

Due to their complex matrix, textiles present surface properties which determine electrostatic interactions with solutes in aqueous solution. In this application report we will show how the zeta potential can be used to investigate the change in the surface charge of textiles.

Processes like dyeing, brightness, finishing operations or performance are strongly related to textile surface properties and to the interactions with the environment (1). The understanding of surface properties allows functionalization and the development of specific textiles for e.g. cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.
The protonation and dissociation of fibre surface groups i.e. hydroxy, carboxy, determine the surface charge of fabrics and their isoelectric point (IEP).Some of the most common applications of zeta potential in the characterization of textiles are presented in this report.
