The Baumé scale is deeply embedded in the chemical industry as a practical way to express and compare liquid densities, especially in process control and quality  assurance. Used alongside hydrometers, this scale is essential in daily operations for industries dealing with acids, bases, brines, sugar solutions, and petrochemicals. Its value lies in quick, on-the-spot assessments, allowing plant operators and technicians to monitor concentrations, ensure compliance with specifications, and guide mixing or dilution processes.


The U.S. Bureau of Standards provides the definitive scientific formulas for Baumé calculations. In these relationships, SG refers to the specific gravity measured
at the designated reference temperature, most commonly SG 60/60 °F as used in traditional U.S. protocols.

For liquids heavier than water:
°Bé = 145 - (145 / SG), with SG (specific gravity) measured at a standard temperature, typically 60°F or 20°C.
For liquids lighter than water:
°Bé = (140 / SG) - 130, using a defined reference temperature.


Baumé readings are widely used for inventory, quality checks, and verifying raw material purity such as confirming acid concentration, standardizing brine, and monitoring sugar fermentation.
