Lubricants | Viscosity of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs)

Kinematic viscosity and viscosity index are important parameters in the specification and monitoring of EALs. Anton Paar’s SVM x001 viscometer series offers the perfect solution for reliable and standard-compliant viscosity testing.

Environmentally acceptable lubricants (abbrev.: EALs) are essentially biodegradable, minimally toxic and non-bio accumulative lubricants. They can either be bio based (e.g. vegetable oils) or synthetic (e.g. esters, PAGs or PAOs). In the EU, lubricants which are classified as EALs are receiving the EU Ecolabel (EEL). To help customers find these lubricants, the EU has issued a Lubricant Substance Classification List (LuSC) which lists base fluids and additives. This list is continuously expanded as new products and manufacturers enter the market.

Demand in EALs is getting higher as machinery users (shipping or mining industry, forestry or construction) need to minimize the environmental impact of their equipment. But there is also pressure from legislation. For instance, the US Vessel General Permit (VGP) and the US Small Vessel General Permit (sVGP) stipulate the use of EALs for several ship sizes for all applications with an oil-to-water interface, like stern tubes, rudders or propellers.
