Using Gas Pycnometry to Analyze 3D Printed Parts and Materials

Gas pycnometry can be used to assess the skeletal density of solids like 3D printed parts and their associated raw materials.

Introduction

Density is an important material property for the 3D printing/additive manufacturing process and it can give insight into how printing properties affect the final printed product. Ultimately, the density will affect the strength and stiffness of the product, as well as the material’s behavior in its eventual application.

The Ultrapyc series of instruments is capable of accurately measuring the skeletal density and the open and closed cell content of 3D printed materials. 3D printed cubes of PLA resin made with various infill % and layer height were investigated and correlations between these printer parameters and open cell content were clearly seen.
