Exploring Materials: Small-Angle X-ray Scattering and X-ray Diffraction Symposium

In celebration of six decades of technology, join us for our workshop taking place on the 03rd (Thursday) and 04th (Friday) of October 2024 on two material characterization techniques SAXS and XRDynamic 500. In collaboration with CSIR and guest speaker Jayita Bandyopadhyay our two day workshop will review the theoretical aspects of these technologies, followed by a live demonstration of SAXS as well as a virtual demonstration of XRDynamic 500.

We will also be joined by three additional guests speakers:

  • International expert - Heiner Santner from Anton Paar GmbH
  • Industry expert - Dr. James Wesley-Smith from Empower Microscopy
  • Research expert - Dr. Candice Cupido from University of Western Cape

SAXS and XRDynamic 500 - where it all began:

  • Did you know that Anton Paar's daughter, Margareta Platzer alongside Dr Otto Kratky formed the basis for the company's first scientific, analytical instrument: the Kratky Small Angle X-ray Camera. Fast forward 67 years on and the SAXSpoint 5.0 is the ultimate SAXS/WAXS/GISAXS/USAXS/RheoSAXS laboratory beamline with synchrotron detector technology for the highest resolution in a compact system.
  • By introducing the first non-ambient XRD instrument back in 1964, we at Anton Paar set a new standard for the study of structural changes in materials under non-ambient conditions. XRDynamic 500’s TruBeam™ concept combines a large goniometer radius, an evacuated beam path, and fully automated X-ray optics/beam geometry change.

Heiner Santner, PhD

Heiner Santner (PhD) has completed a PhD in technical chemistry from Graz University of Technology and held a postdoctoral position at ICMAB - Barcelona with a research focus on synthesis and characterization of energy storage devices by X-ray scattering methods. Since 2006 he is a product specialist for small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering instrumentation at Anton Paar and has developed a deep expertise in SAXS/WAXS/GISAXS instrumentation and its application to the analysis of nano-structured materials like colloidal systems and thin films.

Zwelihle Ndlovu

He is a Sales Specialist for Anton Paar Southern Africa in the Materials Surface Characterization division. He specifically deals with tribology, indentation, scratch testing and coating thickness. He is also responsible for XRD and SAXS. He obtained his BSc. Honours degree in Chemistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Jayita Bandyopadhyay

Dr Jayita Bandyopadhyay earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Laval University, Canada, in 2011. Dr Jayita is a principal researcher at the DSI-CSIR Centre for Nanostructures and Advanced Materials, DSI-CSIR Nanotechnology Innovation Centre, where she develops various functional polymeric materials for packing, additive manufacturing, etc. Her research focuses on polymeric blends and nanocomposite materials for high-end industrial applications. She has developed expertise in Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering to analyse various materials, including nanoparticles, polymer nanocomposites, nanocatalysts, and porous materials.

Candice Cupido

Dr Candice Cupido is a senior lecturer at the Chemistry Department at the University of the Western Cape. She is a member of the Sensorlab research group which focuses on the development of nanosensors and materials development for energy storage applications. Her current research focus is on the development of drug metabolism sensors for various diseases and environmental pollutant monitoring with the use of various nanomaterials and nanocomposites that act as electrocatalysts in these sensors.

James Wesley-Smith

Dr James Wesley-Smith has extensive experience in light and high-resolution electron microscopy that spans across a wide range of biological and material science samples.  He is a strong advocate of using the correct sample preparation approach and imaging modality to access the information required. He has previously managed imaging facilities at Universities as well as the Characterisation Facility of Centre for Nanostructured and Advanced Materials of the CSIR.
