Urea ammonium nitrate concentration analysis with Anton Paar density meters and refractometers for long-lasting nourishment from fertilizers

Urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) is a solution of urea, ammonium nitrate and water that is used as a fertilizer. Both fast acting and long lasting nourishment is provided by three forms of nitrogen. These are the nitrogen in ammonia, in nitrate and the water soluble organic nitrogen in urea.

What is UAN?

Urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) is a solution of urea, ammonium nitrate and water that is used as a fertilizer.

A common grade of these fertilizer solutions is UAN 32, which consists of 45 % ammonium nitrate NH4NO3, 35 % urea CH4N2O, and 20 % water, resulting in a total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 32 %.

UAN Properties

UAN 32 is a clear or golden liquid with a slight ammonia odor. It weighs approximately 1.325 g/cm³ (10.85 lb/gal). It typically has a pH of approximately 6 to 7, a vapor pressure of 4.1 mbar at 15.6 °C and a viscosity of 4.7 mPa.s.
