Medical | Stay Healthy – Make Use of Hand Sanitizer

The right concentration of ingredients in sanitizers saves lives. It is possible that highly resistant bacteria and viruses survive soap washing procedures. Therefore, the use of hand sanitizers is highly recommended to avoid infections.

Introduction

Hand sanitizers are antimicrobial substances (liquid or gel) designed to deactivate or destroy microorganisms (bacteria or viruses) on the hands. These substances are usually based on alcohol products e.g. ethanol or propyl alcohol. Specific amounts of these ingredients are needed to achieve the decontamination effect against viruses or bacteria. Furthermore, products like glycerin are added to moisturize the skin and sustain its natural barrier.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using hand sanitizers and describes the minimum requirements for handrub formulation in their Guide to Local Production.

The WHO recommends two different types of sanitizers.
