Proper Selection of the Adsorption or Desorption Branch for Mesopore Size Distribution Analysis

Care must be taken in properly and accurately calculating pore size distributions from gas sorption data. The choice of using the adsorption or desorption (equilibrium) branch of the isotherm for the pore size calculation depends on the type of pore connectivity (hysteresis loop) present in the sample.


The occurrence of adsorption/desorption hysteresis generates challenges for the pore size analysis of mesoporous materials. The question of whether the adsorption or desorption branch should be taken for pore size analysis has been discussed for many decades. The answer to this question is dependent on the type of hysteresis present in the isotherm.
