Polymer mechanical properties with the Hit 300 nanoindentation tester

Soft materials are widely used in a variety of applications and have a broad range of acceptable mechanical properties. Traditional measurements of hardness and elastic modulus are not adequate for these materials due to their time-dependent properties. This application report highlights the use of instrumented nanoindentation for characterization of common polymers.

Anton Paar TriTec develops and manufactures precise instruments for characterization of mechanical properties of surfaces for many types of materials. In the last several
decades, characterization of the mechanical properties of polymers and soft materials has become an important phase in their development as materials become more complex. The first part of this application report  provides an overview of selected applications for soft materials for testing of hardness and elastic modulus. The second part will cover instrumented nanoindentation as a technique for characterizing soft materials.
