Oxidation Stability of Waxes
Anton Paar tested different wax compositions with the oxidation stability tester RapidOxy 100. The oxidation stability provides information about the storage life of materials such as stearin and paraffin when exposed to autoxidation.
This Application Report describes how to measure the oxidation stability of pure waxes and waxes containing different amounts of paraffin with the RapidOxy 100.
The rapid small scale oxidation tester, RapidOxy 100, is a fast, safe and user-friendly alternative to traditional stability test methods. The instrument measures the induction period, which can be used as an indication of the oxidation and storage stability. Compared to other oxidation and storage stability test methods, the RapidOxy 100 procedure requires only a small sample quantity to give exact test results in a short period of time.
The RapidOxy 100 artificially accelerates the oxidation process by using increased temperature and oxygen pressure. It is a rapid test method to determine oxidation stability without preliminary sample preparation.
An exemplary application for the RapidOxy 100 is the oxidation stability test of waxes, e.g. used by candle producers. We tested wax samples typically utilized as raw material in candle production. These raw materials may have different compositions showing distinct characteristics.
Basically, there are two different kinds of material for candle wax – stearin and paraffin. Many candles consist of a mixture of both materials.
The RapidOxy 100 makes it possible to compare the complete range of compositions (100 % stearin to 100 % paraffin) with only one test procedure.
