Oxidation Stability of Rubber

The ageing process of the rubber in tires correlates with its thermal-oxidative stability. Therefore it is very important to investigate oxidative properties of the tire raw materials and semi-finished compounds in order to guarantee the quality over the tire’s life time.

Automotive tires are made of approx. 40 % rubber in about a dozen different natural and/or synthetic rubber compounds. The resulting tires are exposed to extreme environmental conditions and mechanical stress which influence the ageing of the rubber compounds.

For this application report, different rubber materials have been supplied by a tire manufacturer. Until now, the aging behavior and oxidation stability had been determined by inhouse methods.

The purpose of the measurements was to show whether the RapidOxy 100 could determine the oxidation stability of the supplied samples and whether the results would match the customer’s own findings.
