Mechanical Characterization of Microwires Using the Universal Testing Machine Micro

The mechanical properties of thin micro-scale devices and samples such as e.g. microwires vary from the bulk material properties and additional data is needed to ensure reliability even under complex (multiaxial) loading conditions. To investigate sample behavior under such loading conditions, a torsional test can be performed in monotonic and cyclic mode.

Microwires are used in a wide range of different applications (e.g. in micro-electronic devices, robotics, sensors, solar cells) due to their unique magnetic, mechanical and physical properties. Investigating the deformation and failure behavior of such small-scale specimen is a challenging task where multiaxial loading conditions are needed in addition to uniaxial tests.
