Measurement of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) in dissolved form is widely used in the production process in various industry branches. Density measurement is a suitable solution for fast and reliable concentration determination of NaOH solutions.

Introduction

Sodium Hydroxide solutions find widespread use in various shades of dilution. Concentration determination is essential for the smooth production process of a variety of chemicals and products including plastics, resins, adhesives, coatings, herbicides, paints, pharmaceuticals, soap and detergents, textiles, glass and ceramics. It also plays an important role in water treatment, aluminum production and oil refining as well as in the pulp and paper industry. One method for concentration determination of sodium hydroxide solutions is titration, where correct and precise results are neither trivial nor quick. Besides, the operator is exposed to the caustic sample. Another method is the determination of the solution’s density, and, derived therefrom, its concentration. This alternative is fast, accurate and safe as the operator’s exposure to the lye is minimized.
