Material Brief: Porous Materials for Sound Absorption - Ultrapyc PoreMaster

Commercially available earplugs made from polyurethane cellular foam were characterized for pore size distribution and density on the PoreMaster 33 and Ultrapyc 5000. This material brief demonstrates a procedure to obtain open porosity from mercury intrusion measurements combined with skeletal density data.

The PoreMaster 33 and Ultrapyc 5000 were utilized to perform a detailed study regarding the pore size distribution and open porosity of commercially-available ear plugs comprised of polyurethane cellular foam. Physical dimensions of the specimens were also measured and the geometric volume obtained from that measurement was used along with the skeletal density data to perform open porosity calculations.
