Hints for Microwave-assisted Extraction

When transferring conventional extraction procedures to microwave protocols several issues have to be kept in mind. Different instrument types for various workflow, throughput and sample amounts are available. This document briefly explains what has to be considered to set up a satisfactory microwave-assisted extraction process.

Classical extraction methods, like Soxhlet, usually suf-fer from several drawbacks. The methods are rather time-consuming (extraction times in the range from hours to days are typical for Soxhlet extractions) and require high amounts of solvents, whereas the possi-bilities of automation are limited.

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) eliminates those drawbacks. With typical extraction times from 15 to 30 minutes and typical solvent amounts between 6 and 30 mL, MAE is a powerful and meanwhile widely accepted method to speed up extraction applications.
