Flash point determination of silicon-containing sealants

Silicone-containing sealants are widely used in construction industries. The flash point of the respective product depends mostly on the VOC content.

PMA 500 and PMA 300 are part of Anton Paar’s family of next-generation flash point testers. They are the ideal solution for automatic high precision flash point testing according to EN ISO 2719, ASTM D93 and more.

VOCs are necessary components in many types of adhesive systems primarily to adjust viscosity or used as solvents or thinners, that work with resin – the part, that binds together all the ingredients of the sealant and allows them to adhere to the various building materials.

However, the emission of VOCs to atmosphere has to be reduced because VOCs contribute to the formation of photochemical smog, may be implicated in aggravation of lung diseases, absorb infra-red radiation and act as greenhouse gases. For this reason, VOC standards restrict the VOC content for adhesives, sealants, adhesive primers, sealant primers and adhesives applied to particular substrates. For the development of new products in these sectors this means aiming at lowering the VOC content of the final product as much as possible.

Apart from environmental issues, the flash point of adhesives mostly depends on the VOC content of the product. In transportation, adhesive products have to be classified in class 3 as a viscous, flammable liquid if they have a flash point below 60 °C.

However, a low flash point can be a safety issue, not only in transportation, but also already in the production process. Therefore, measuring and knowing the flash points of the product during the production stages and for storage and transportation is vital.
