Consistency of Plasma-Treated Plant Oils

The penetrometer PNR 12 was successfully applied in the characterization of various plasma-treated vegetable oils exhibiting wax-like properties. The automatic surface detection makes the instrument easy to operate and facilitates consistent measurements and a high test throughput.

Plant oil-derived materials have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional petroleum products. They are renewable, highly biodegradable and non-toxic and have already found use as lubricants, biofuels, fuel additives and bio-based polymers.

Plasma treatment of plant oils is a powerful technique to alter their natural composition in order to improve important rheological properties required for demanding industrial applications.

The consistency measurement with Anton Paar’s penetrometer PNR 12 allows quick and easy access to material properties in a non-invasive manner and can therefore serve as a valuable tool to optimize process parameters and to control the quality of the finished product.
