Chemistry | NMP | Inline N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone Concentration Measurement in NMP Recycling Processes

Efficient recovery of lithium-ion battery waste treatment units relies on the precise monitoring of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) concentration. Anton Paar's offers with inline sensors, L-Sonic 5100 and L-Com 5500 a remarkable and state-of-the-art solution, covering NMP concentration measurement from 0-100 % with an unbeatable accuracy of up to +/- 0.09 %.This enables economic re-use and seamless 24/7 process and quality control.

NMP, the number one solvent for the produc-tion of lithium-ion batteries

During the production of lithium-ion batteries, a high amount of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or N-methyl-pyrrolidone (short NMP) is used. The electric car boom is expected to lead to an increased demand for NMP in the future.
NMP is used as a solvent for nickel, manganese and cobalt powders for electrode plate coating. Not only the lithium-ion battery production uses NMP on a large scale, the substance is also used for the recovery of certain hydrocarbons which are generated in the petrochemical industry, for the absorption of H2S in sour gas treatment units or for dissolving certain polymers such as PVDF.
Given its high cost as a raw material, NMP is actively recycled, particularly in the field of battery production. Anton Paar offers effective control and monitoring of the recovery process through the L-Sonic 5100 inline sound velocity sensor or the combined density and sound velocity sensor, L-Com 5500. Both ensure consistent concentration control of NMP liquids in tanks and pipelines.
