Chemistry | NMP | Inline N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone Concentration Measurement in NMP Recycling Processes

The controlled and exact monitoring of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone concentration in the recovery process of lithium-ion battery waste treatment units ensures maximum NMP output for economic re-use and 24/7 process and quality control. Anton Paar’s outstanding inline sound velocity sensor L-Sonic 5100, Version SST is well suited for the continuous inline concentration measurement of NMP and recycling unit process control.

NMP, the number one solvent for the produc-tion of lithium-ion batteries

During the production of lithium-ion batteries, a high amount of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or N-methyl-pyrroli-done (short NMP) is used. Due to the excellent prop-erties of NMP regarding solubility as well as chemical and thermal stability, the liquid is the number one sol-vent when producing lithium-ion batteries. Because of the electric car boom, even an increased demand of NMP is expected in the future.
NMP is used as a solvent for nickel, manganese and cobalt powders for electrode plate coating. Not only the lithium-ion battery production uses NMP on a large scale, but the substance is also used for the re-covery of certain hydrocarbons which are generated in the petrochemical industry, for the absorption of H2S in sour gas treatment units or for dissolving certain polymers such as PVDF.
NMP is an expensive raw material. For this reason, especially in battery production, the used NMP is re-cycled. To control and monitor the recovery process, Anton Paar provides with the inline sound velocity sensor L-Sonic 5100 made of SST 1.4404 as wetted parts, a strong and cost-efficient package for the con-sistent concentration control of NMP liquids in tanks and pipelines.
