Chemical | Hydrochloric / Muriatic Acid – Spirit of Salt

Hydrochloric acid is an important and widely used chemical. The hydrochloric acid quality and concentration has to be checked before use in steel pickling, oil well acidizing, food manufacturing, or the production of many organic and inorganic materials. This concentration check can be done with Abbemat refractometers from Anton Paar.

Hydrochloric acid is the aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride gas which is a naturally occurring component of the gastric acids in human and animal stomachs. Nevertheless, it is extremely corrosive and toxic in high concentrations. In the U.S. concentrations between 20 % and 32 % are sold as muriatic acid. Concentrated hydrochloric acid with a high mass fraction of hydrogen chloride (40 %) forms acidic mists and is called fuming hydrochloride. Hydrochloric acid is one of the basic industrial feedstocks.
