Accurate Tobacco Moisture Results for Value and Process Control with the Brabender MT-CA Automated Oven Dryer
The Brabender MT-CA moisture analyzer brings tobacco moisture testing into an efficient oven-drying workflow. It determines water and solvent content, supports up to 10 samples, and helps improve final quality checks, production control, and drying-profile optimization.
Moisture content is a key quality and commercial parameter in tobacco. Tobacco varieties are classified in
groups according to drying method and production costs. Delivered moisture content can influence price
adjustment against the reference value fixed for each group of varieties. This makes reliable moisture
determination essential for fair valuation, final quality checks, and process control. The target values and
tolerances cited here are commercial reference values by tobacco type, with values ranging from 16 % to
26 %[1]. Actual process-control limits may differ by material state and analytical method.
The instrument is built for this challenge. It provides individual and serial gravimetric determination of loss on
drying (LOD) / oven volatiles in tobacco samples such as fresh, conditioned, or dried leaves. In routine tobacco
quality control (QC), LOD is often used as a practical moisture indicator; however, the value is based on mass
loss and is not compound-specific. By combining oven drying with moving air, integrated weighing, and dryingcurve
display, the instrument turns tobacco moisture analysis into a faster, more informative, and more
productive workflow. This application report outlines the measuring principle, typical tobacco drying conditions,
and the main business benefits of the instrument for tobacco laboratories and production sites.
