2-Step Acid Digestion of Graphite Materials for Analysis with ICP-OES and ICP-MS
The Multiwave 7101/7301/7501 series with its PDC (Pressurized Digestion Cavity) offers the opportunity to digest demanding samples such as graphite for subsequent element analysis.
Graphite is a crystalline elemental form of carbon with its atoms arranged in a hexagonal structure. It occurs naturally and is the thermodynamically most stable modification of the element carbon under standard conditions. The high resistance against corrosive solutions makes sample preparation for subsequent wet chemical element analysis a great challenge: significantly high target temperature and suitable acid mixture are required.
Multiwave 7101/7301/7501 series with its well-established PDC (Pressurized Digestion Cavity) offers an advanced temperature level of up to 300 °C, thus providing sufficient digestion quality for most demanding samples requiring higher temperatures.
In order to demonstrate the suitability of Multiwave 7101/7301/7501 series several sorts of graphite materials were tested. Afterwards the element concentrations were determined via ICP-OES and ICP-MS respectively.
Two-step Digestion Procedure
- In the first digestion step the bulk of the inorganic matrix will be destroyed.
- Afterwards the reaction gases will be released upon careful opening.
- In the second digestion step freshly added oxidant improves the decomposition of the remaining residues.
