Capillary-Breakup Extensional Rheology

Add capillary-breakup extensional rheology to your MCR 703 MultiDrive and expand from shear to extensional material characterization in one integrated system. The customized setup captures filament thinning and breakup with a fast linear drive, dedicated camera system, and image analysis, enabling determination of breakup behavior and extensional relaxation times. Combined with optional CTD 600 temperature control, it allows testing under application-relevant conditions, optimizes processing windows, and improves prediction of the real performance of adhesives, inks, coatings, polymers, and food products.

Reliable filament-breakup analysis

Characterize the breakup dynamics and viscoelastic response of complex fluids through precise filament-thinning measurements based on fast sample deformation with a moving-magnet linear drive, a dedicated camera system, and image analysis. The solution enables investigation of relaxation behavior, stringiness, spinnability, and extensional viscosity in materials that cannot be fully understood through shear measurements alone.

One platform for shear and extensional rheology

The new setup for capillary extensional measurements expands the benefits of MCR 703 MultiDrive by adding extensional rheological characterization of viscoelastic fluids to an already established high-end rheometer platform. This allows users to measure not only shear properties, but also filament evolution, breakup behavior, viscosity, and elasticity under extensional flow conditions on the same instrument. As a result, MCR 703 MultiDrive users gain deeper application insight and broader analytical capability, achieving a more complete understanding of complex fluids without the need for an additional standalone system and with a consistent user experience across all measurements.

Precise temperature control for real-condition testing

Optionally, the setup for capillary extensional measurements can be combined with the CTD 600 convection temperature device, enabling extensional measurements under application-relevant conditions. This allows users to investigate how temperature affects filament thinning, breakup behavior, and viscoelastic response under conditions close to real processing or final application. As a result, critical temperature-dependent material properties can be identified more reliably, supporting formulation optimization, robust processing windows, and improved prediction of application performance.
